The Actuarial Edge 2026: Students across India put their actuarial skills to the test

The case study competition exposed aspiring actuaries to real business challenges and skills expected in the workplace.

More than 300 students from across India have taken part in a competition to solve a real-world business problem that put their analytical and actuarial learning to the test.

The Actuarial Edge 2026 ran from June to August and culminated in a final on Indian Actuaries’ Day, with the finalists presenting their solutions to a panel of experienced actuaries and business leaders.

Students Aarushi Malik, Anushka Sharma and Taneesha Singh from Shri Ram College of Commerce finished in first place with a solution that addresses India’s retirement income gap.

‘WeCare’ from Team Case Solvers helps employees balance retirement savings with competing priorities like housing or parenting. It combines actuarial modelling, behavioural insights and financial goals to assess retirement readiness and provide transparent, tailored recommendations. See all the winners listed below.

The competition’s objective was to give students a chance to apply their learning to a practical, industry-relevant challenge, bridging the gap between academia and the real world. Teams had to demonstrate their ability to understand a business problem, evaluate different approaches, develop recommendations, and communicate their thinking effectively.

Jointly organised by the IFoA and Marsh, the initiative received a strong response, with the 81 teams who entered representing over 30 institutions.

After the initial evaluation in July, 9 teams were shortlisted for the finals, which Marsh hosted at their Gurugram and Mumbai offices on 21 August.

Through initiatives such as this, the IFoA aims to give aspiring actuaries greater exposure to real business challenges, industry professionals and the skills increasingly expected in the workplace.

The Actuarial Innovation Challenge 2026, a similar competition designed to bring together the brightest undergraduate minds to solve real-world actuarial problems, launched this week.
