As someone who is passionate about fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace, I was thrilled to be a part of the launch of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) DEI Employer Network this June.
The launch session brought together 16 employers who share a common vision of championing socio-economic diversity. This marked a significant milestone in our journey toward creating a more inclusive and diverse profession, where individuals regardless of their backgrounds can thrive and contribute their unique perspectives.
The IFoA DEI Employer Network event featured expert speakers who shared their experiences and valuable insight into championing socio-economic diversity in their organisations, including:
Tamar Hughes highlighted the urgency and importance of creating a fair and equitable environment for individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds within the financial services sector.
Phil and Amaka, drawing on their experience in acquisition and early careers at Aon, discussed successful strategies for attracting, developing and retaining diverse talent through early careers programs.
Simon Reichwald concluded the speaker session exploring the pivotal role of technology in effectively tracking impact and progress, emphasising the significance of data-driven decision-making.
Attendee Ruth Hollick, Talent and Acquisition Lead at L&G, found the session valuable:
"The IFoA DEI Employer Network was an insightful session with excellent speakers and well-thought-out content. It provided a great opportunity to bring together peers from across the industry to discuss how we can collectively make a real difference".
IFoA DEI Employer Network is part of the IFoA’s ongoing commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the actuarial profession. By fostering collaboration and sharing best practices, the DEI Employer Network creates a space for knowledge sharing and advocacy for DEI issues.
This DEI initiative will help drive cultural change and create an inclusive environment that will enable our profession to better embrace the richness of diverse perspectives.
Our next Network session, scheduled for Friday 29 September, will focus on neurodiversity in the workplace. If you're as eager as I am to engage in this conversation and would like to take part in our next Network event, please contact me at richard.scott@actuaries.org.uk.

In a world that increasingly recognises the transformative power of diversity, equity and inclusion, the IFoA's DEI Employer Network provides a space for us to shape a more inclusive and equitable future together.
