Through IFoA led Reflective Practice Discussions, members often highlight that some of the most meaningful and impactful professional development happens when learning opportunities arise within their day-to-day work.
By adopting a broad definition of a CPD activity, the IFoA’s CPD Scheme recognises this. It encourages members to identify their individual learning needs, engage in learning activities that lead to meaningful outcomes and take a more holistic view of learning.
Problem-solving in complex situations, collaborating with colleagues, leading new initiatives, engaging in cross-functional projects or navigating emerging challenges -– all of these can represent rich and valuable CPD when approached with intent.
This is where reflective practice discussions come into their own. They provide a dedicated space to step back and consider not just what you have done, but what you have learned. Often, it is through reflection that the significance of everyday experiences becomes clear –- insights gained, skills developed and perspectives broadened.
Rather than asking “what CPD hours have I completed?”, reflective practice discussions encourage a more meaningful question: “where has my professional development really taken place this year?” In many cases, the answer will extend far beyond formal learning activities.
By embracing the flexibility of the CPD Scheme and engaging fully in reflective practice discussions, members can build a richer, more authentic picture of their development - one that recognises learning in all its forms and supports continued growth in an ever-evolving profession. In doing so, CPD and reflective practice come to life in the workplace, turning everyday experiences into powerful opportunities for growth.
